OREANDA-NEWS A powerful source of greenhouse gas has been identified in the bolts of Western Siberia. The environmental discovery is reported by the press service of Novosibirsk State University.
The study was initiated at Yugra State University. The scientists were tasked with finding out the age and origin of methane in the river backwaters of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.
During the year, experts examined samples of local water and found an unusually large shift in the isotopic composition of methane. This confirmed the marsh origin of the gas. "Swamps are the main natural source of methane in Western Siberia. Methane from the upper layers of swamps enters the atmosphere through the roots of plants (...) A powerful source of methane will exist until the swamps disappear," the Novosibirsk scientists concluded.
The Louisiana swamps, which have become the hallmark of the American state, are already threatened with extinction. The famous swamps, nicknamed the "horror of Louisiana," are flooded with salty ocean waters. Sea levels are rising amid the climate crisis.
