OREANDA-NEWS  A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 has occurred in eastern Turkey. This was reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

Powerful tremors were recorded on Wednesday, October 16, at 10:45 local time (coincides with Moscow time). According to experts, the epicenter of the tremors was 47 kilometers east of the city of Malatya with a population of about 441,000 people. The earthquake was centered at a depth of 9 kilometers.

The tremors were felt not only in the province of Malatya, but also in two neighboring ones — Diyarbakir and Elaziga. It is clarified that the earthquake caused panic among local residents — fearing a natural disaster, they ran out into the streets. At the moment, there is no information about the destruction or damaged buildings.
