The President of Latvia: Latvia and Russia share opportunities for expanding cooperation
OREANDA-NEWS. During the accreditation visit of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Latvia Yevgeny Lukyanov, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stated that despite the different positions on significant issues of the international politics, both countries shared opportunities for expanding practical intersectoral cooperation.
“We are the neighbouring countries and we share mutual benefits of developing cooperation in culture, trade, transport, preventing illegal migration, and combating organised crime,” said Raimonds V?jonis.
At the same time, Raimonds Vējonis expressed concern about the escalating situation in the east of Ukraine and called for Russia to fulfil the Minsk agreements.
The President of Latvia and the Ambassador of Russia agreed at the meeting that the work of Latvian-Russian intergovernmental commission should be intensified next year. Latvia committed to organising a meeting of that intergovernmental commission in the first half of 2017.
The officials appreciated the accomplishments of the Latvian and Russian border demarcation commission, which completed the practical process of border demarcation last year.
