OREANDA-NEWS One hundred and thirty-seven natural foci of plague are found in 17 aimags (regions) of Mongolia, including on the border with Russia and China. This was announced on Friday by the National Center for the Study of Zoonotic Infections of Mongolia at the 25th International conference "Problems of Zoonotic Infections".
"According to the results of recent studies, 137 natural plague foci were found in 17 aimags in the country. In the high-risk zone are the western regions on the border of the Russian Federation and China, where cases of plague are registered annually. For 30 years of observations in the aimag of the Khovd on the border with China, 32 residents fell ill, 13 of them died. In the last decade, the incidence has increased there. Cases of human disease and death from the plague were registered in Khovda in 2020 and 2022," the research center cited the data.
WHO Permanent Representative in Mongolia Socorro Escalante at the opening of the conference recalled that this event takes place once every two years for effective cooperation of countries in the fight against diseases that are transmitted to humans from animals. In particular, this conference discussed a rare case that occurred in China, where a person contracted the plague from a sheep.
"In our country, where there are 20 times more domestic animals than the population, cattle breeding is intensively developing. Also, the natural world of Mongolia is rich in wild animals and birds. Therefore, we have a high risk of an outbreak of zoonotic infections," said the country's Minister of Health Sodnomyn Chinzorig.
