UEFA Ordered the Ukrainian National Team to Remove the Slogan "Glory to the Heroes" from the Uniform for Euro 2020
OREANDA-NEWS. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) claimed that the Ukrainian national football team remove the inscription "Glory to the Heroes" from the uniform for the European Championship.
On the T-shirts in which the national team of Ukraine will play at Euro 2020, there is an outline of the country with the Crimea in its composition, on the back - the inscription "Glory to Ukraine!", And on the inside of the gate - "Glory to the Heroes!" The Russian Football Union addressed UEFA with a letter in which it drew attention to the fact that sports equipment is used for political statements.
UEFA noted that it approved this form back in December, but admitted that it did not take into account the meaning created by the combination of slogans.
"After further analysis, the specific combination of these two slogans is clearly considered to be political in nature, having historical and militaristic significance. Therefore, this particular slogan on the inside of the jersey must be removed for use in UEFA competition matches," the union's press service told RIA Novosti.
At the same time, the first part of the slogan ("Glory to Ukraine!"), According to UEFA, can be considered as "a general and non-politicized phrase of national importance" and, accordingly, used on the form. As for the outlines of the country with Crimea in its composition, this does not require any changes in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution on the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the press service added.
UEFA's demand was commented on by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova. According to her, sport is not a battlefield or a political arena.
"Become sports heroes, and you will be glorified. That is how, and not with nationalist slogans, you should glorify your homeland," the diplomat wrote in a Telegram channel.
