OREANDA-NEWS Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev explained why he refused to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are quoted on the website of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Rublev said that he missed the Games in order to perform well at the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal. "The idea of not going to the Olympics was to be more prepared for Canada, so if I'm in the finals, our plan worked," he added.

On the night of August 12, Rublev reached the final of the tournament in Montreal, defeating Italian Matteo Arnaboldi. In the decisive match, the Russian will play against the representative of Australia Alexey Popyrin.

Rublev is ranked sixth in the ATP rankings. He is the 2020 Olympic champion in mixed doubles with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
