OREANDA-NEWS The Russian defender of the Philadelphia Flyers, Ivan Provorov, was hit in the head with a puck in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season match against the Winnipeg Jets. This is reported on the league's website.
The incident occurred in the second period. After a throw by Winnipeg player Josh Morrissey, the puck hit the Russian's head. Provorov fell on the ice from the blow and was in this position for about 30 seconds. After that, he was able to get up on his own and walk to the bench. Provorov managed to avoid injury and soon returned to the ice.
The match ended with a score of 5:3 in favor of Winnipeg. Provorov scored the first goal for Philadelphia in the 19th minute of the match.
On January 18, Provorov refused to go to the rollout before the match with the Anaheim Ducks because of the use of a uniform with LGBT symbols on it. The athlete explained that he respects everyone's choice, but prefers to remain true to himself and his religion.
After that, Canadian TSN journalist Gord Miller called for the Russian hockey player to be punished. He considered that freedom of speech does not exempt from consequences. However, the NHL management stressed that players have the right to decide which promotions to participate in.
