Hundreds of Football Fans were Detained in Moscow Due to the Use of Pyrotechnics
OREANDA-NEWS. In Moscow, police detained several hundred fans of the capital's CSKA football club after a match with Zenit St. Petersburg, held on Sunday, November 28, as part of the 16th round of the Russian Football Championship.
The game ended with a score of 2:0 in favor of Zenit. After the match, however, the fans who were located in the C stand were unable to leave the stadium. Numerous riot police and police officers sent hundreds of fans, including women, to search, and then put them in paddy wagons. The «Sport-Express» media writes about 408 detainees. The searches lasted more than three hours.
Apparently, the mass detention of CSKA fans was due to the large-scale use of pyrotechnics on the podium in the second half of the match. They started releasing fans from the Timiryazevsky police department only after three o'clock in the morning.
The CSKA club published a statement on the night of November 29, in which it expressed regret that during the match with Zenit, «for the first time in the history of VEB Arena, pyrotechnics were used on such a scale»."
«We condemn those who committed these illegal actions, but at the same time we believe that the innocent should not suffer. We will continue to contact law enforcement agencies to resolve the situation as soon as possible. The club will also provide free legal advice for our fans», the club said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Russian Premier League said that the actions of the police «violated comfort and put people's health at risk», and promised to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident, RIA Novosti reports.
