Golovkin Knocked out Sheremeta in a Fight for Two Titles and Set a New Record
OREANDA-NEWS. The evening of professional boxing ended In Hollywood (Florida, USA). The most anticipated event of the evening was the fight between Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) and Pole Kamil Sheremeta (21-0, 5 KOs) for the titles of the world champion by versions IBF and IBO middleweight champion, Vesti.kz correspondent reports. The fight was calculated for 12 rounds. From the starting bell, the challenger rushed into the battle and tried to occupy the center of the ring. However, after several missed jabs from Golovkin, the Pole's ardor cooled down later. In the very ending with the gong, the Kazakhstani completely knocked down his opponent.
The rivals spent the second three minutes in an active exchange of blows, as a result of which Sheremeta again found himself on the canvas. But this time, the Pole managed to get up and continue the battle.
In the fourth round, Golovkin knocked down his opponent for the third time, but failed to finish. It all ended after the seventh three minutes, in which Sheremeta again found himself on the canvas - the Pole's corner refused to continue the battle. Thus, GGG won by technical knockout.
Thus, Golovkin successfully defended his title for the 21st time and broke the record of the legendary Bernard Hopkins. Prior to this fight, both had 20 victorious fights each in champion status - this is a divisional record. The American did this between 1995 and 2005, and it took GGG two years less to repeat this achievement (2010-2018).
As a reminder, Ali Akhmedov, a representative of GGG Promotions (16-1, 12 KOs), spoke on the undercard. True, the Kazakhstani sensationally lost by knockout in the fight for the vacant IBO middleweight title, having suffered the first defeat in his career.
