OREANDA-NEWS. Austrian officials will not attend the Beijing Winter Olympics due to antiquated restrictions and not due to the diplomatic boycott that some countries have announced. This was announced on Tuesday, December 14, by the Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
"This is not a diplomatic protest or boycott, the reason is that the restrictions against the coronavirus in China are too tight," the Chancellor said the Associated Press.
Due to the virus, it will not be possible to meet Austrian athletes in person in China, so there is no point in going to Beijing, Nehammer said.
“It makes no sense for politicians or diplomats from Austria to go to China to talk with athletes via video link. I'd better meet our athletes personally in Vienna, ”he said.
At the same time, the Chancellor stressed that he opposes the politicization of the Games.
According to the newspaper, a diplomatic boycott means that the officials of the countries that announced it will not go to Beijing and will not participate in events within the framework of the Games. The participation of athletes from these countries in the Olympics is not limited.
The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February.

The reason for the decision in Washington was called "the genocide in Xinjiang and other violations of human rights."

In turn, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the UK does not support a sports boycott of the 2022 Olympics in China, but the country's ministers do not plan to attend the event.
On December 8, Canada also supported the diplomatic boycott. At the same time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted that the athletes of the Canadian national team expect the opportunity to compete at the Olympics and can count on the full support of the government.
