OREANDA-NEWS There is less counterfeit money in Russia — in the second quarter, the number of banknotes of the Bank of Russia with signs of forgery decreased by 30.7 percent year-on-year. Such data are provided in the review of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation "On cash turnover".

In total, 2,081 counterfeit banknotes were detected in April-June. The number of coins with signs of forgery has also significantly decreased — by 40 percent, to 39 pieces.

The regulator said that as of July 1, the amount of cash in circulation in Russia increased slightly — by 0.3 percent, to 17.926 trillion. The number of banknotes in circulation by the end of the second quarter reached 8.1 billion, which is 5.2 percent more than a year earlier.

In the autumn of 2023, Goznak announced that the updated banknotes in denominations of one thousand and five thousand rubles have enhanced protection against counterfeiting compared to previous versions due to a significantly redesigned protective complex. The new banknotes contain "the most high-tech and reliable signs, which are now easy to check without special equipment, and at the same time extremely difficult, if at all possible, to forge," the company said.
