The share of Mir cards in card transactions in the Russian Federation in the first half of the year increased to 49.4%

OREANDA-NEWS The share of Mir payment system cards in the total volume of domestic transactions in the first half of 2023 increased by more than 8 percentage points and amounted to 49.4% (at the end of the VI quarter of 2022 it was 41.3%), according to the Main Directions of development of the financial market of the Russian Federation for 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The use of contactless payment methods also continued to grow, according to the results of the first half of 2023, 23 billion transactions were carried out, which is 20% more than in the same period last year. The volume of such transactions increased by 25% over the year, to 24 trillion rubles.
Earlier, the first deputy chairman of the Central Bank, Olga Skorobogatova, reported that national payment instruments (Mir card, SBP, MirPay, SberPay, YandexPay and others) could occupy about 85% of the market on the horizon of three years, displacing the cards of the international Visa and Mastercard systems.
In March 2022, the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard simultaneously announced the suspension of work on the Russian market due to the military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. Within the Russian Federation, Visa and Mastercard cards of Russian banks continue to work, as operations on them have been processed by the National Payment Card System since 2015.
