The Number of Attacks on Banks and Post Offices over the Past 30 Years has Fallen by 95% in Germany
OREANDA-NEWS. The number of attacks on banks, savings banks and post offices has decreased by 95 percent over the past three decades in Germany. As the dpa agency writes on Monday, November 15, citing data from the Federal Criminal Affairs Agency (BKA), only 80 attacks on financial institutions and post offices were recorded last year, compared with 1,623 in 1993.
Police, banks and insurers identify several reasons for this phenomenon. If in the mid-90s there were almost 70 thousand bank branches in Germany, then at the end of 2020 there were about 24 thousand, according to the German Federal Bank (Bundesbank). That is, robbers today have less choice than before. Technological progress and the decline in the importance of cash also play a role. In addition, banks have significantly improved security measures.
Criminals, therefore, take an extremely high risk. In 2020, the police managed to solve almost 80 percent of attacks on banks, and in 2019 — more than 90 percent. «Additional security measures, such as, for example, reducing the amount of cash, lead accordingly to a decrease in the expected profit, which, as a rule, makes robberies unattractive crimes from the point of view of risks and benefits», explains the representative of BKA.
