OREANDA-NEWS Sweden has announced that it will provide Romania with more than $27 million to support the delivery of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine.
The Swedish government has decided to allocate 300 million Swedish kronor (approximately $27.1 million) as indirect assistance to Ukraine's air defense efforts. The funds will be transferred to Romania to replace the Patriot system that has been provided to Ukraine.
In June, Romania's Supreme Defense Council approved the transfer of the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. Romania currently operates two such systems, with two more currently undergoing operationalization.
Earlier, the Romanian Cabinet submitted a draft amendment to the law on ground-based air defense capabilities to the parliament, allowing for the transfer of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to third parties.
Russia maintains that arms transfers to Ukraine impede the process of settlement, directly implicate NATO nations in the conflict, and constitute a dangerous gamble. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized that any shipments containing weapons for Ukraine would be considered legitimate targets for Russia. He pointed out that the United States and NATO are actively involved in the conflict, not only by providing weapons but also by training personnel in the UK, Germany, Italy, and other countries. The Kremlin asserted that the influx of Western weapons into Ukraine is not conducive to negotiations and will have detrimental consequences.
