OREANDA-NEWS The Russian Embassy and trade mission are negotiating with the Turkish authorities after several local banks refused to make payments due to Western sanctions, head of the diplomatic mission in Ankara Alexey Yerkhov told RIA Novosti.
"The Embassy and the trade mission are in intensive contact with the competent Turkish authorities in connection with the refusal of a number of Turkish banks to make payments in the interests of Russian business entities. At the same time, some banking institutions directly refer to Western sanctions, the decision to tighten them was made at the end of December last year," he said, commenting on information about difficulties with payments from Russia.
On Tuesday, the local newspaper Ekonomim reported that Turkish exporters faced refusals from banks to make money transfers from Russia. According to the newspaper, they have almost stopped since January 1, and exporters are waiting for urgent decisions to continue trading. The Ministry of Commerce has begun to study this issue.
The diplomat expressed hope that the parties will find a solution that will satisfy Turkish exporters selling goods that are not subject to restrictions and their Russian partners.
As a source in one of the country's state-owned banks in Ankara told RIA Novosti earlier this week, the problem with the financial transactions of Turkish exporters with partners from Russia has been present since the beginning of the year, partly due to pressure on Turkey due to Western sanctions. The agency's interlocutor noted that a solution could be found by the end of the week. At the same time, he added that the country's banking sector had not received evidence that the Turkish side was helping to circumvent anti-Russian restrictions.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed that Ankara does not join unilateral sanctions against Russia, while not allowing them to be circumvented. The former official representative of the Turkish president, now the head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), Ibrahim Kalyn, stated that if the republic imposes restrictions on Moscow, they will play primarily against Ankara itself.
