OREANDA-NEWSRussians are faced with a new problem when paying with foreign credit cards in the European Union, writes vPost with reference to Russian tourists. In March, European firms began to require cardholders to confirm their right to legally stay in the country where it was issued. Many "card tourists" do not have it.
The publication has become aware of cases where such conditions are imposed by car rental companies in Italy and Germany. One of the interlocutors of vPost said that when trying to rent a car at Milan airport with a Visa card issued by a Kazakh bank, he was faced with a request to present a document on the right to residency. The local branch of the American company Budget stated that these are its new rules. The firm's manager warned that "many EU trade and service organizations" will soon introduce new conditions.
vPost got acquainted with the standard Budget contract and found that such a requirement really appeared in the document. In addition, another Russian who tried to rent a car from Budget using an Armenian bank card at Dortmund airport told about him.
The Firefly car rental company also requires to confirm the right to residency in the country where the card was issued. According to a traveler from Russia, the managers of the company asked her for such a document when renting a car in Rome. She intended to pay with a Visa card of a Belarusian bank. Firefly managers approved the payment after finding information on Google that Russia and Belarus are a Union state. The interlocutor of the publication said that she was apologized and said that "this is not their initiative, but the new requirements of the European Union."
As vPost recalled, last summer, when entering the European Union, when checking border control, Russians began to selectively check the availability of funds for the entire period of stay. The service asked to present cash or a bank card working on the territory of the block.
On March 6, the Bank of Russia extended restrictions on cash withdrawals in Russia for another six months — until September 9, 2023. The measure implies that the bank's client can withdraw from the accounts in dollars and euros only those funds that were received there before March 9, 2022, but not more than the amount equivalent to 10 thousand dollars. The remaining amount on the account can be received in rubles.
