Russians don't Want to Pay via QR Codes, Preferring Payments by Phone
OREANDA-NEWS. The international payment system Visa announced that it is rejecting the idea of developing a payment system using QR codes in Russia, since there is no demand for such a service from citizens, banks and shops. RBC writes about this with reference to the head of Visa in Russia Mikhail Berner.
He explained that payments through mobile phones quickly gained popularity in Russia. Berner believes there will be more mobile payments - payments by phone - rather than QR-code payments. According to Berner, Russia is ahead of many countries in terms of the use of payments using smartphones.
At the same time, the head of the company in Russia noted that Visa will continue to develop a payment system for QR codes outside of Russia. It takes root well where there are infrastructural problems associated with the low quality of the Internet, the high cost of equipment for accepting cards and a combination of two factors.
Payment by phone was launched in Russia in 2016, when Samsung Pay and Apple Pay mobile wallets appeared. With their help, Russians can pay for purchases contactlessly - for this you just need to put your smartphone to the terminal. Last year, Russia became the second-largest Apple Pay user in the world, behind only the United States.
