OREANDA-NEWS. Russia has decided to write off the economic debt of Sudan. This is evidenced by the statement by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Sudan, Mohammad Sharif, quoted by RIA Novosti.
The diplomat thanked the Russian authorities for meeting Khartoum halfway on the issue of debt cancellation. The country expects to sign a memorandum on debt relief with Moscow.
“[The Sudanese debt problem] is clearly hampering our progress on the path of economic transformation. We hope to reach an agreement to write off some of the Sudanese debt. This problem continues to exist, we have debts to other countries, ”Sharif added.
In July, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that Sudan is eligible for aid under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Program. Reported by RIA Novosti.
The economic situation in the country has deteriorated markedly since the military coup that took place in April 2019. Demonstrations have taken place in Sudan in recent weeks demanding the resignation of the president. Protesters have appealed to the army to remove al-Bashir from his post, which he has held for 30 years. President Omar al-Bashir was removed from power. A prolonged period of political instability led to a deterioration in the economic situation in the country.
