OREANDA-NEWS. Inflation in Germany rose to 7.4% in April, the highest on record since the reunification of the state. This was reported in a press release from the country's Federal Bureau of Statistics (Destatis).

It is noted that consumer prices in April rose by 7.4% compared with the figure for the same month last year.

“Inflation hit a new high in reunified Germany for the second month in a row,” said Destatis President Dr. Georg Thiel.

The bureau notes that prior to this, inflation jumped to 7.3% in March, mainly as a result of rising energy prices.

They believe that the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis are becoming more noticeable in Germany.

In addition to rising energy prices, food prices have also risen. In April, prices increased by 8.6% compared to the same period last year. On a monthly basis, prices increased by 3.6%.

The department stressed that the last time such a high level of inflation in the former federal territory was observed in the fall of 1981, when oil prices also rose sharply as a result of the First Gulf War between Iraq and Iran.

The German Foreign Minister earlier announced that Berlin plans to reduce energy consumption from Russia to zero - and this is forever. According to Annalena Burbock, economic dependence on Russia "does not lead to security." She also announced the impossibility of lifting sanctions against the Russian Federation, even if they begin to negatively affect the German economy. Earlier in Germany they declared that they were ready for an oil embargo, although they did not rule out the emergence of problems at the regional level.
