OREANDA-NEWS. Payment card "Mir" will receive a domestic chip for contactless payment. The fact that the National Payment Card System certified the first domestic-made chip for contactless payments for use in the Mir payment system was told to the Russian media by the representative of the chip development company Research Institute of Molecular Electronics (NIIEME) Alexey Dianov and confirmed in the department.
As the media clarifies, today in the Mir cards for contactless payment foreign chips are installed: Cosmo and Optelio from France and South Korean Kona. At the same time, Russian chips do not support one-touch payment technology - such cards must be inserted into the payment terminal. According to Dianov, the new chip is designed specifically for the new system, it has its own operating system. The chip will be produced at the Mikron plant (just as NIIME is part of the joint venture AFK Sistema and Rostec). The NSPK explained that the device complies with international standards.
The use of the new Russian chip for one-touch payment in Mir cards will depend on the participating banks of the payment system, as they are responsible for issuing cards and choosing a chip for them. According to the Russian newspaper, the contactless chip from Mikron was included in the list of chip models and their manufacturers recommended by the National Payment Card System.
According to the National System of Payment Cards for Chip Models, the majority of Mir cards are now issued with support for contactless payment technology; at the end of May 2019, Russian banks issued 59.4 million Mir cards. At the same time, Mikron’s capacities allow it to produce about 4 million chip modules per month (48 million per year), while over the past year and a half, 5.5 million chips have been issued (in terms of production for the current year - 3 million), notes mass media.
