OREANDA-NEWS. May 12, 2009. The expert working group of the Interagency Commission for Monitoring International Human Rights Commitments of Turkmenistan held a regular meeting in Ashgabat. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan in collaboration with the UNDP Representative Office in Turkmenistan in the framework of the cooperation programmes. The officers of the State Migration Service, bars and khyakimliks of Ashgabat, journalists were invited to the meeting. Irina Liczek, UNDP consultant attended the meeting.

As is known the Interagency Commission for Monitoring International Human Rights Commitments of Turkmenistan was established in 2007 as the permanent advisory body in accordance with the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan. The Commission is responsible for preparing the national reports on the implementation of the UN human rights conventions, submitting the reports to the treaty bodies, drafting the legislative and institutional proposals on the implementation of international norms. This work had resulted in intensifying the fruitful dialogue between Turkmenistan and the UN leading agencies.

The agenda focused on the preparation of the national report on the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment Turkmenistan ratified on April 30, 1999 and the presentation on the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The participants exchanged views on the issues under discussion concerning the implementation of the relevant legislative regulations in particular.
