Dmitry Medvedev Met with Prosecutor General Yury Chaika
OREANDA-NEWS. January 12, 2009. Mr Medvedev informed the Prosecutor General that he has sent to the State Duma (the lower house of parliament) a draft law amending one of the articles in the Civil Procedural Code, giving the Prosecutor General’s Office additional powers to ensure protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms.
The proposed amendment would make it possible for prosecutors to file in the courts declarations in defence of people’s social rights (employment rights, pension guarantees, protection of health, motherhood and childhood, medical assistance, education rights, environmental rights and also the right to state and municipal housing). Prosecutors would go to the courts on the basis of citizens’ requests.
Mr Medvedev also congratulated Mr Chaika and all the Prosecutor General Office’s staff on their professional holiday – Prosecutor Office’s Day.
