Belarus Informs UNECE on Its Intention to Build Nuclear Power Station
OREANDA-NEWS. July 23, 2008. The Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection sent a notification letter to the Secretariat of the UNECE Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) informing it on the intention to build a nuclear power station.
The letter says that Belarus intends to build a nuclear power station with the productive capacity of 2 thousand megawatt with the first block being put into operation in 2016. At present, scientific, research and survey work is being carried out on the territory of the Mogilev, Grodno and Vitebsk oblasts to find the appropriate site for building the future nuclear power station.
“The Ministry of Natural Resources has also prepared information letters to notify the five neighboring countries on the Belarus’ intention to build a nuclear station on its territory,” the Ministry noted. The letters were sent to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry to be further delivered through the diplomatic post to the UNECE, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia which is not party to the EIA Convention.
