OREANDA-NEWS. June 24, 2008. Up-to-date methods of intracavitary radiotherapy (brachytherapy) were introduced at the Rivne regional oncology hospital (West Ukraine) with the use of the Micro Selectron HDR V3 device (the Netherlands).

According to Mykola Marchenkov, head of the radiology department of the hospital, it is the first complex like this to have been launched in Ukraine. It is worth USD 1 million, and was received under the Chornobyl program.

The number of oncology patients is increasing in Rivne region every year. The disease is especially spread in northern, polluted with radio nuclides as a result of the Chornobyl accident areas with a population of 400,000 - nearly a half of the whole population of the area, 16,000 of them having been diagnosed oncology diseases.
